On 12 March NLA Learning hosted our second Careers Advice and Networking event for young people, following on from the success of our sold-out architecture portfolio surgery session in November 2017. This twilight event, generously hosted by Gardiner & Theobald, was a chance for teenagers to find out more about construction careers.
17 young people attended the event from schools all over London. Largely new to NLA, many of these young people had been encouraged by their teachers or parents to find out more about engineering, surveying and construction apprenticeships.
They heard from a range of speakers including young female engineers from Costain and Sir Robert McAlpine and a surveyor from Gardiner & Theobald. They then took part in speed-networking sessions with these speakers, as well as other contributing organisations including Derwent, Arup, Sustrans and the Construction Youth Trust.
Student’s feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positively with the majority saying they had found it helpful for considering their future career options. They most enjoyed speaking to the professionals at the end of the event with several commenting on this activity being a fantastic opportunity to gain contacts for work experience placements.
The NLA Learning team is proud to be able to broker these connections between our members and enthusiastic young people interested in pursuing careers in the construction industry.
These events will continue to be held quarterly representing the full range of built environment disciplines and catering to a mix of interests.
