The Building Centre Trust is a unique organisation in the construction industry bringing together all its many disciplines to provide a forum for debate and sharing of ideas. The Trust has also established a vibrant educational programme for professionals in the industry.
Spencer de Grey CBE, Deputy Chairman of Foster and Partners has recently become Chairman of the Building Centre Trust, succeeding Hugh Try CBE who chaired the Trust from 1995. Spencer de Grey takes over at the beginning of a new era and welcomes New London Architecture (NLA) to the Building Centre.
The Building Centre provides a home for a diverse range of professional, educational and industry organisations that are either based here, meet here or exhibit here. We are thrilled that Peter Murray accepted our invitation to establish NLA here at the Building Centre. NLA provides a major addition to our community - it will become an important platform to debate the role of architecture in the continuing development of London as a world city. The Olympic Games will add a further dimension – we see an increased role for all the activities at the Building Centre making sure that the building industry rises to the challenges it will face to create an inspirational Olympic Games.
Spencer de Grey said:
“We have completely transformed the ground floor of the Building Centre to create a major new architectural exhibition space for London with its debating forum, information centre, café and bookshop. This has been driven by our new partnership with New London Architecture. I pay tribute to Nick McKeogh of Pipers and Peter Murray of Wordsearch who have joined with us to create this exciting venue at such an important moment for London. I look forward to welcoming everybody to the Centre who has an interest in the environment of our great city.”
Notes for Editors
The Building Centre Trust has an important educational programme which has uniquely concentrated on the multi-disciplinary and technical aspects of design and construction. At the busiest times of the year we are hosting on average 2 events per week both on our own and in partnership with a number of different organisations within the industry. We have seen important initiatives in renewable energy, celebrating the fabricators who play such an important role in achieving design, 3D modelling and fabrication, modern methods of construction in housing, to name but a few.
The Building Centre Group, the trading company which provides the funds for these activities, also has an exiting programme of development. New galleries which will emphasise important areas for the industry – sustainability, innovative products and new materials.
New London Architecture will have a major impact on the Centre’s activities activities: The Building Centre Trust is curating exhibitions and events on London Health Care and Prefabricated Housing at NLA later this year and the product exhibitions are already seeing the impact of the huge number of people who are interested in their city, the materials and products and design which make it a special place to live and work.
